AC Powered Outdoor UPS and Battery Backup Solutions for Telco Applications

MMOEDSL system operators experiencing dropped network connections due to short term power losses can retrofit their systems with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). The addition of a UPS will ensure continued system operation during power disruptions by providing clean, consistent uninterrupted power. System operators can reduce field service calls and customer complaints due to increased network availability.

Alpha Technologies Ltd., a member of The Alpha Group, recently designed an AC powered outdoor UPS solution for the telecommunications industry that offers backup power at the cross connect to manage power disruptions and prevent lost network connections. This UPS system, called a Multi-Mount Outdoor Enclosure (MMOE), can satisfy a number of installation scenarios (pole, host, wall or pedestal) and features a ruggedized design to withstand harsh outdoor environments. The MMOE also meets stringent agency approvals (UL, CSA, NEBS Level 1 and GR13).

Alpha Technologies assists National US Wireless Carrier expand network for Enhanced 3G

CXPS 24->45-iA major wireless carrier asked Alpha Technologies to develop a powering solution to allow deployment of Enhanced 3G Technology into their existing network.

National Account Managers David Olps and Mark Beckley worked closely with the customer to understand the architecture and their powering needs. The technical challenge was to provide -48V power, ample distribution and alarming for the distributed remote radios from their existing 24V power systems. The business challenge was to meet the customer's tight build schedule, while providing an optimized solution with respect to physical size and system cost.

It was determined that the new Alpha CXDF 24-48, 2kW converter modules were an ideal fit to meet the radio deployment guidelines. An existing Alpha front access distribution panel was utilized to meet the distribution requirements. The final piece of the puzzle was to incorporate the Cordex CXCi controller to provide alarming back to any legacy power system in the network. This new system is called the CXPS 24->48-i and provides up to 8,000W of 48V power, 18 breaker positions and alarming, all in 5RU of rack space!

This system highlights the flexibility of the CXPS to be seamlessly integrated into existing networks that feature non-Alpha equipment, allowing carriers to meet constricted build schedules, ramp up wide-scale deployments and do it all with a reasonable capex cost.
